Artist Discussion: Dorian Agüero with Lilly Barrientos
Saturday, March 28th (10:30-noon)
“The Fragmented House” expands Abraham Lincoln’s warning that “a house divided against itself cannot stand,” but moves beyond political rhetoric toward psychosocial collapse. The division is not only national; it is internal, domestic. This phrase serves as a lens through which Agüero examines fractures in human relationships, families, societies, and nations.
The exhibition establishes a visceral parallel with The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. Like Gregor Samsa, Agüero’s figures awaken already transformed: no longer recognized, no longer useful, no longer fully human within the structures that once defined them. The home becomes a place of estrangement. Family and friends become witnesses to the mutation. The transformation in this work is not merely physical; it is political, social, emotional, and spiritual. It reflects the slow dehumanization imposed by expectations or what happens when systems of power redefine our values and when identity distorts under pressure.
